Build From the Inside Out
The Core, and what it used to cost to build one.
In 2018, Italo filed a trademark for an idea he had carried for years: The Core: Start From Within. The belief behind it was simple — “every great business, every loyal customer, every meaningful sale, every lasting brand begins from a single place. It begins from the Core.”
Then life happened. Building the original platform between 2018 and 2020 cost well into six figures: a copywriter at $3,600 per project, a web developer at $7,000, a campaign manager at $3,000 a month, an SEO specialist at $4,000 a month, a video team at $15,000. “We spent more time managing the people we hired to help us build than we spent actually building.” The pandemic hit, health collapsed, the trademark lapsed, and the platform sat on a hard drive.
The book tells that story for one reason — the contrast: “what is possible in 2026 is not just better than what was possible in 2018. It is a completely different reality.” The work that cost six figures and two years can now be built by a single Founder in days. Which means the expensive part is no longer the building. The expensive part is knowing what is true at your center.
Three Layers, One Direction
The framework has three layers, and the order matters more than the layers themselves.
The CORE — your values and identity. What cannot move.
CONNECT — your team, your leaders, your customers. The people your values reach.
CREATE — solutions, value, growth. The visible things the world buys.
Most builders work outside-in: pick a product, chase a market, bolt on a “brand,” and hope a center forms later. The book’s diagram is blunt about where that ends: “Outside-in building starts with what the world sees and never reaches a center. Inside-out building starts with who you are — and everything visible grows from what is true in the Core.”
Why This Is Lesson Two
This course is called the Four-Hour Foundation, and here is the honest reason the Core comes before any productivity mechanics: four focused hours pointed at work that contradicts your values will burn you out faster than twelve unfocused ones. The operating system you’ll install in Lessons 3 and 4 assumes you know what the hours are for.
The question the chapter leaves you with is the one to sit with today: “Are you building from the outside in, or from the inside out?”
“Are you building from the outside in, or from the inside out?”
— The Mentor Economy
- 1Take a fresh page and write three headings: Core, Connect, Create.
- 2Under Core, write the three values you would keep even if they cost you money this quarter.
- 3Under Connect, list the five people your work most directly serves right now — by name.
- 4Under Create, list what you currently sell or plan to sell. Then draw an arrow showing which direction you have actually been building. Be honest.
