Four Questions Before You Build Anything
Where you actually stand on the gap nobody names.
Every expedition starts the same way: you find out exactly where you are before you take a single step. Not where you hope you are. Where you are.
In Chapter Three of The Mentor Economy, before naming the gap, the book asks you to locate yourself with four honest questions. We’re starting the Foundation there, because everything you build over the next five lessons depends on this reading.
The Four Questions
Take a piece of paper. Write down four numbers, one through four. Next to each number, write yes or no. As the book puts it: “Be honest. Nobody is watching but you.”
One. “Do you have at least one AI system that does real work for your business every single week, without you having to copy and paste into a chat window?”
Two. “Have you trained an AI on your specific knowledge, voice, and methodology — so it produces output that sounds like you and reflects how you actually think?”
Three. “If you stopped working for a week, would any meaningful part of your business still produce output, follow up with clients, or move forward without you?”
Four. “Can you point to three specific tasks AI now does for you that you used to do yourself — that have measurably improved your output or freed your time?”
Reading Your Score
Count your yeses. Three or four: you are on the right side of the gap, and this course will sharpen what you’re already doing. One or two: you’re in the middle — you’ve tasted what’s possible but haven’t built the systems yet. Zero: this Foundation was built for you, and the fact that you’re here means you already sense something needs to change.
What the Gap Actually Is
Here is the sentence the whole book turns on:
“The gap is not between humans and machines. The gap is between those who understand how to deploy AI inside their specific industry and those who do not.”
The pessimists say humans are losing to machines. The optimists say humans and machines will work together. The book argues both miss the real story: the field has split into two groups who woke up in the same economy on the same morning — the ones who started, and the ones still waiting. “The first group is winning. The second group is falling behind. The gap between them is widening every single week.”
A master carpenter understands wood in ways a machine never will. A seasoned broker understands a market in ways an algorithm never will. That earned knowledge has always been valuable. What changed is that your knowledge and an AI system can finally multiply each other instead of competing.
